An exterior elevation of the Library of Congress, drawn in ink and gouache, shows the building as its designers planned its outward face. The Library's main building, now called the Thomas Jefferson Building, was designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and constructed between 1890 and 1897, after the growing collection outgrew its space in the Capitol. Drawings like this one record the decorative and structural choices behind the Beaux-Arts facade and remain useful to researchers tracing how the design developed.
