This ink and wash drawing shows the principal front of the Library of Congress, the building that became the nation's main library after Congress outgrew its quarters in the Capitol. Such presentation sketches let architects and officials judge a building's massing, proportions, and decoration before construction began. The Library's main building, now known as the Thomas Jefferson Building, was a major project of the late nineteenth century, when the young federal government was building monumental civic architecture in Washington. The wash tones suggest how the stone facade would catch light, which is worth noticing if you compare the drawing with the finished building.
