This is an ink and wash drawing of the principal front of the Library of Congress, the building now known as the Thomas Jefferson Building. The library began in 1800 inside the U.S. Capitol, and after British troops burned the Capitol in 1814, Congress bought Thomas Jefferson's personal book collection to restart it. The main building, designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and opened in 1897, gave the library its first home of its own. Its ornate facade is a leading example of American Beaux-Arts design, and drawings like this one show how the architects planned that front.
