Heidelberg, the university town on the Neckar River in Germany, gives this humorous scene its name, and the title may also echo the sentimental German play *Alt-Heidelberg*, which was popular on American stages in the early 1900s. The town's ruined castle and centuries-old university made it a favorite subject for travel views and student-life stories. Detroit Publishing Company, which made both photographs and hand-colored photochrom prints, often turned to lighthearted subjects like this one to appeal to tourists and armchair travelers. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative, made around 1905, is the original image from which prints were made.
