Troy, New York, put its Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument at the center of a public plaza, and this 1905 view records the memorial as the city's civic gathering point in the years after the Civil War. The monument honors local men who served in the Union forces, and monuments like it were common in American towns of that era, when communities often raised funds by subscription to remember their veterans. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American cities and landmarks, so the plate offers a useful record of how the square and its surroundings looked at the turn of the twentieth century.
