Dated October 4, 1929, this glass negative records Herbert Hoover with Army engineers, a pairing that fits his background as a mining engineer and his long interest in large public works. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented government officials and events in the early twentieth century, made the image during Hoover's first year in office, only weeks before the stock market crash later that month. Because the negative is on glass, it may show streaks and other blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which are worth keeping in mind when viewing it.
