Dated October 10, 1929, this National Photo Company view pairs President Herbert Hoover with a Pulaski commemoration and a centennial group, the two subjects named in its title. The date falls near October 11, the day honoring Casimir Pulaski, the Polish-born cavalry commander who died of wounds fighting for American independence in 1779. Hoover had been in office only since March, so the photograph is an early record of his presidency. The glass negative, a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French, shows streaks from the natural deterioration of its original coating.
