Herbert Hoover appears with a Houston, Texas group in this glass negative dated September 6, 1929, about six months into his presidency. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active from about 1900 to 1936, recorded many visiting delegations and official callers, and sessions like this one show how politics of the day was often conducted through posed group portraits. Glass negatives of this size were a common working medium for press and commercial photographers of the period. The record notes streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coatings, and the negative came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
