Hoover's name sits beside Casimir Pulaski's in the title of this glass negative, which dates to October 10, 1929, several months after Hoover took office. Pulaski, the Polish-born cavalry officer who served in the American Revolution and died at Savannah in 1779, is remembered by Polish-American communities each fall. The plate came from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials and public events in that era. Streaks and blemishes across the glass are attributed to natural deterioration of its original coating.
