Seated and in costume, Buster Keaton fills this full-length frame, a rarer pose than the close-up head shots that usually circulated with his name. By 1939 he was well past his peak as a silent-era star, having left MGM in 1933 and spent the decade in shorts and supporting roles. Publicity pictures like this one served newspapers and studios, which kept large morgues of images for stories about performers. The stone-faced deadpan that made him famous in films such as *The General* (1926) is the quality most worth looking for here.
