A full-length portrait of a man in Middle Eastern costume, his arm around a young boy, shows how studio sitters of the 1840s and 1850s often posed in borrowed dress for an exotic effect. This half-plate daguerreotype was gold toned to deepen its darks and sharpen the image, and it was made in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose portraits from this period are widely studied. The plate came to the Library of Congress in 1920 by transfer from the U.S. War College, and the sitters remain unidentified. Costume pieces like this one reflect a mid-century American fascination with distant lands.
