Market Street, photographed looking west from 12th Street, was one of the main east-west arteries of Philadelphia, and this view shows the long commercial corridor that ran toward City Hall. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1915, sold hand-colored and photographic views of American cities and landmarks to travelers and publishers. The subjects listed here, streets, civic buildings, and commercial facilities, suggest the photographer was documenting how the city's downtown worked as much as its architecture. Market Street's storefronts and trolley traffic made it a favorite subject of the era.
