Looking west or east from the corner of Eighth Street, this view takes in Market Street, the central commercial artery of Philadelphia. The Detroit Publishing Company produced views like this across the United States in the years around 1900, and this one was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, a format that recorded fine detail in busy streets crowded with carriages, wagons and streetcars. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, and it offers a useful glimpse of downtown commerce before the automobile reshaped city streets.
