Taken around 1898, this panoramic view follows the Detroit River waterfront across a long glass negative measuring 7 by 21 inches. It comes from the Detroit Photographic Company, later renamed the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued numbered views of American cities and scenery in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The river was the city's commercial lifeline, carrying freight and passenger steamers between Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie, so a waterfront scene from this period records the working harbor that fueled Detroit's growth. The wide format is worth noticing, since it lets the viewer take in the full sweep of docks and shipping at once.
