Piers and wharves line the Detroit River in this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, which places the view at the working edge of the city's waterfront. The Detroit River carried heavy lake traffic between Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair, so its docks handled freight, passenger steamers, and the goods that moved between Michigan's industries and markets farther east and west.
