The title "Old Timers" suggests the subject is older vessels still working the water, a common sight on the Detroit River around 1903. The strait links Lake Erie to Lake St. Clair and Lake Huron and forms the border between Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, so it carried heavy lake freight traffic. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this glass-plate negative, documented American cities, rivers and industry in this period, and the image gives a sense of the working waterfront as steam-era cargo ships moved ore, grain and coal through the region.
