This section drawing of the United States Capitol is annotated with the name S. Hallet, which points to Stephen Hallet, the French-trained architect who produced early designs for the building in the 1790s before a dispute with the commissioners led to his dismissal. Cut through the building, the sheet shows the interior arrangement of rooms and spaces as the design took shape. Drawings like this one, made in ink, graphite, and wash, let historians compare the first plans with the structure Latrobe, Bulfinch, and others later completed.
