Views of the 1000 block of 13th Street Northwest, as the numbers 1005 through 1011 in the title indicate, place this negative in downtown Washington's commercial blocks, a short walk from Pennsylvania Avenue. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the early twentieth century, made many pictures of the city's streets and storefronts, which were widely reproduced as postcards for visitors and residents. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the decay of the original coatings, a common trait of glass negatives of this age.
