A longitudinal section cuts the building lengthwise, exposing its floors, stair halls, and the tall central spaces that are hard to see from the exterior. Drawings like this one record how the Library of Congress's main building was planned in the 1890s, when it was designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz in the Beaux-Arts style and opened in 1897. Architects used such sections to coordinate structure, light, and circulation before construction, so the sheet shows the building's internal logic as well as its appearance. The record notes this is a reference copy from the Prints and Photographs Division's architectural and engineering holdings.
