A longitudinal section slices a building lengthwise, exposing its interior rooms, floors and structure as if one long wall had been removed. This one depicts the Library of Congress, which by its title is the Thomas Jefferson Building in Washington, D.C., designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and opened in 1897 after years of construction. Ink and color drawings like this were used by designers and builders to plan and check the complicated arrangement of reading rooms, stacks and public halls. The section shows the layered interior and ornate central spaces in ways an exterior view could not.
