Rather than showing the building's exterior, this drawing cuts the Library of Congress lengthwise, revealing the rooms, stair halls and tall central spaces as they were planned inside. The main building on Capitol Hill, now called the Thomas Jefferson Building, was designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and completed in the 1890s. Sections like this one helped designers and builders show how height, light and circulation fit together, and the use of ink and colored ink makes the interior layout easy to follow.
