This drawing cuts the Library of Congress lengthwise, exposing its interior rooms, galleries, and stacked floors as if the building had been sliced open from end to end. Ink and wash was a common way for late nineteenth-century architects to present such sections to clients and builders, with the shading suggesting depth and volume. The Library's main building, the Jefferson Building, opened in 1897 in the Beaux-Arts style, designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz. This copy is a reference copy from the Prints and Photographs Division.
