Rendered in ink and color on paper, this sheet presents the elevation and section of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., as a single architectural view of the building's exterior and interior. The Library's main building on Capitol Hill, the Thomas Jefferson Building, was designed by John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz and opened to readers in 1897 in the Beaux-Arts style. Drawings of this kind show how architects worked out a building's proportions, massing and internal layout before construction, which makes them useful for reading the structure's design intent.
