This glass negative, dated May 13, 1922, shows Herbert Hoover in a baseball setting, a combination that sets it apart from the many portraits of him on this board. In 1922 Hoover was serving as Secretary of Commerce under President Warren G. Harding, and he was a prominent public figure whose appearances at public events drew press photographers. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio, made thousands of such pictures of officials and events in the early twentieth century. The record does not name the game or the ballpark, so the exact occasion is unconfirmed. Glass negatives like this one often show streaks or spots from age, which can be seen on this example.
