Dated May 3, 1921, this glass negative from the National Photo Company pairs Herbert Hoover with a man named Davis, according to the title written on the plate or its sleeve. Hoover had taken up his post as Secretary of Commerce that spring under President Harding, and the company's Washington studio made many portraits and news pictures of officials of that era. The plate's streaks and blemishes come from the natural breakdown of its original coatings, which is worth noticing when you compare its surface with the crisp detail beneath.
