Herbert Hoover is shown here alongside the American and Japanese Davis Cup teams, a detail that sets this glass negative apart from the many portraits of the president on this board. The Davis Cup was the premier international men's tennis competition, and by 1929 the annual contest between the two nations drew real public attention. The picture comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a Washington studio whose staff photographed officials, visitors and sporting events in the 1920s and 1930s. Its date, May 24, 1929, places it early in Hoover's first year as president, when he was often photographed meeting sports and civic groups.
