This June 1929 view shows Herbert Hoover at a Pan American health gathering, a few months after he took office as president in March of that year. Washington's National Photo Company made the image on a glass negative, a format that was common for press and studio work of the period. The plate has the streaks and blemishes typical of aging emulsion, which show up as faint marks across the image. Those flaws are a useful reminder of how fragile these early negatives are and how much of their history survives in the surface itself.
