Few pictures in this collection show a president at a patriotic society's gathering quite like this one, which records Herbert Hoover with members of the Sons of the American Revolution on October 25, 1929. The Sons of the American Revolution, founded in 1889 for descendants of Revolutionary War patriots, was a fixture of civic life in the capital, and a Washington studio such as the National Photo Company would have been well placed to document its events. The picture dates from just days before the stock market crash of October 29, a reminder of how official business carried on as the economy turned. The image survives as a glass negative, and its streaks and blemishes come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
