Magdalena Bay in 1908 was a remote stretch of the Pacific coast of Baja California, then a federal territory of Mexico under the government of Porfirio Díaz. The bay's sheltered, shallow waters supported a small population of fishing families and a few coastal settlements, and the region was far from the railroads and mining districts that drew most of Mexico's investment at the time. Visiting vessels were infrequent, so contact with the mainland and with Mexico City came mostly by sea and by slow overland routes. Within a few years the national political order that Díaz had built would be shaken by the Mexican Revolution, which began in 1910 and reached even the most isolated Pacific shores.
