Looking north up Fifth Avenue from 40th Street, this c1919 view places the New York Public Library's Beaux-Arts main building in the middle distance, where the avenue meets 42nd Street. Designed by Carrère and Hastings and opened in 1911, the library was one of the city's most prominent new civic buildings, and its marble facade and stone lions at the entrance became well-known landmarks. The photograph is by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer whose street scenes were registered for copyright, and it shows the avenue in the years just after the library opened.
