Looking south down Fifth Avenue from 42nd Street, this view puts the New York Public Library's main building front and center, its marble facade rising on the avenue's east side. The library opened in 1911, a Beaux-Arts landmark designed by Carrère and Hastings, and the stone lions Patience and Fortitude guarding its steps were already familiar sights by the time this photograph was made around 1917. The American Studio, a commercial firm, produced the print, so it reflects how the city's grand new civic architecture was presented to the public in the decade after the library's opening.
