The title names *Sutton's ABC Reading and Drawing Lessons*, but the scene itself is a shoe store, so the engraving may have been a commercial or advertising image rather than a picture of a classroom. Engraved by Smart after a drawing by Nohman and dated about 1871, it belongs to the period when illustrated periodicals filled their pages with storefronts, merchandise and everyday retail life. Prints like this were made in large numbers for popular audiences in the decade after the Civil War, and they show how ordinary shopping was pictured then.
