A Bible being read in the home was a favorite subject for printmakers of the 1840s, and this hand-colored lithograph from about 1848 shows how a New York publisher turned domestic piety into a mass-market image. Nathaniel Currier, working alone before his partnership with James Merritt Ives, printed such pictures in large runs and sold them cheaply enough for ordinary households to hang on the wall. Family scripture reading was central to Protestant life in mid-nineteenth-century America, so the print offers a window onto the values its buyers shared. Hand coloring, often done by teams of workers, gives surviving copies slightly different palettes.
