Nathaniel Currier issued this hand-colored lithograph in New York around 1848, when his shop was turning out sentimental and domestic scenes for a broad middle-class market. Titled "Reading the Bible," it belongs to a large group of Currier prints that treated Scripture reading as a quiet family ritual, often showing a parent or elder with children gathered by lamplight or a hearth. Such images were cheap enough to hang in ordinary parlors and reflected the Protestant household devotion that was widespread in antebellum America. The catalog number, 5501, in the Gale Research raisonné places it among Currier's documented output of the decade.
