Titled simply *Reading the Scriptures*, this hand-colored lithograph was issued by Nathaniel Currier in New York before his 1857 partnership with James Merritt Ives. Currier's firm sold inexpensive color prints to a broad middle-class market, and scenes of family devotion like this one were popular, reflecting the central place of the Bible in many American homes. The work is listed as no. 5504 in Gale Research's Currier & Ives catalog raisonné, which helps date and identify it.
