Few subjects in this gallery were as close to daily household life as Bible reading, and this hand-colored lithograph presents that devotional scene under the plain title *Reading the Scriptures*. Nathaniel Currier issued it from New York in the decades before his partnership with James Ives, between about 1835 and 1856, when his firm turned out inexpensive pictures for a broad middle-class market. Lithography allowed quick printing in quantity, and the hand coloring, applied by workers along production lines, gave each sheet a slightly different finish. The piece is catalogued as number 5504 in the standard Currier & Ives reference.
