In this image, Abraham Lincoln is shown in his role as president, reading the Bible aloud to a young son. The pairing of the nation's highest office with a quiet domestic scene was a deliberate choice for many artists and printmakers who depicted Lincoln during and after his presidency, from 1861 to 1865. Lincoln was largely self-taught and famously read widely, with the Bible and Shakespeare among his favorite books. Images like this one leaned on that reputation to present him as a plainspoken,家庭-centered man of learning, a picture of virtue that helped shape how many Americans remembered him after his assassination in 1865.
