Frederic Goudy designed this bookplate for the books of himself and his wife, Bertha, and used his own letterforms to do it. It shows his Goudy Text and Deepdene Italic types alongside a monogram he drew specifically for the plate. Goudy was one of the most prolific American type designers of the early twentieth century, and he ran private presses where he set and printed books by hand. A plate like this served as both an ownership mark and a small display of his craft. The caption card records no date, but both typefaces come from his most productive years as a designer.
