A small girl, Adeline Tapley Fuller, sits on an upholstered sofa in this three-quarters length portrait, made around 1852 on a sixth-plate daguerreotype plate. Her married name, Stowell, links the plate to the family papers that reached the Library of Congress, where it entered the Manuscript Division in 1955 as part of the Ellery C. Stowell Papers. The brass mat bears the stamp of S.H. Whitmore, the studio that made it. Early portraits of children were often posed with furniture and drapery to help a sitter stay still through the long exposure, so the sofa is worth a closer look.
