Saint Peter's Square in Rome, photographed in 1909, sat at the edge of the Vatican, across the Tiber from the older city center. Italy had been a unified kingdom for about four decades by then, and Rome, its capital since 1871, was growing fast as government offices, new apartment blocks, and tram lines pushed outward from the medieval core. The Vatican's relationship with the Italian state remained strained after the loss of the Papal States, so the square was both a major pilgrimage destination and a symbol of that unresolved dispute. Visitors arriving by rail from Naples or Florence would have crossed the open plaza toward Bernini's colonnades, which by then drew tourists as much as worshippers.
