Chatham, Ontario, sat on the Thames River in Kent County, and around 1870 it was a market town built on farming, grain and tobacco, with the Great Western Railway linking it to Hamilton and Windsor. Its population had grown steadily since mid-century, and its mills, foundries and shops served the surrounding farm families. Chatham also had a long history as a destination for people who had escaped slavery in the United States, and a Black community there had built churches, schools and mutual aid societies since the 1840s and 1850s. In 1858 the town hosted a national emigration convention that drew Black leaders from across North America, a gathering local residents would have remembered as part of their town's identity.
