Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1879 was a garrison and naval town whose harbor had served the British Royal Navy and its North American station for generations. Its dockyard, the Citadel on its hill, and the wharves along the waterfront gave the city much of its character, and shipping, sugar refining, and foundry work provided steady employment. The Intercolonial Railway had linked the city to the wider Canadian rail network only a few years earlier, in 1876, so Halifax had recently become more connected to Montreal and Quebec than it had been. The city was still rebuilding in places from the great fire of 1857, which had destroyed a large part of its center. Residents of the day would have known Halifax as the principal port of the Maritime provinces and as a place where military and commercial life ran side by side.
