Hamilton, Canada West, sat on the western shore of Burlington Bay at the head of Lake Ontario in 1859, and it was becoming one of the most important industrial and commercial centers in the province. The Great Western Railway had reached the city in 1854, linking it to Niagara, Toronto, and the Detroit River, and that connection drew wholesale merchants, foundries, and mills to its waterfront and rail yards. Residents also depended on the Desjardins Canal, which had opened in 1837 to give vessels a passage into the harbor from the lake. Hamilton was then a young incorporated city, and its streets, churches, and commercial blocks were crowded with the growing population that the rail and trade had brought in.
