Sherbrooke, Quebec, in 1881 was a young city of the Eastern Townships, where the Magog and Saint-François rivers meet and where mills and workshops depended on water power. Textiles, leather, and other manufacturing gave the town its working character, and rail connections linked its factories and merchants to Montreal, Quebec City, and the American border. The city had received its charter only a few years earlier, so its council was still settling questions of streets, water, and public order that came with rapid growth. Residents of both English and French background shared the town's churches, schools, and commercial streets, and the bird's-eye view shows the ordered grid and river setting that people of the time would have recognized as their home.
