St. Thomas, Ontario, in 1896 was the county seat of Elgin County and one of the busiest railway towns in southwestern Ontario. Several lines met there, including the Canada Southern, the Michigan Central, and the Grand Trunk, and the railway shops and freight yards gave many residents steady wages. The Port Stanley line carried passengers and freight south to the Lake Erie harbor, tying the town's trade to the lake and to markets across the border in the United States. Local life centered on the courthouse square, the churches, and the commercial streets around the main downtown blocks, where merchants, mechanics, and railway men shaped the town's civic affairs. The view that people in the town would have recognized most readily was of a place built around the tracks, with the rail yards and depots as its working heart.
