Tumpat, a river town near the Thai border in northeastern Malaya, is the setting here, with its railway godowns (storage sheds) and jetty laid out from above. The line that reached Tumpat ran along Malaya's east coast and linked this small port to the wider rail network, so the goods stored beside the tracks and the wharf at the water's edge were part of a busy trade route. The date is given as about 1943, when Japan occupied Malaya and aerial photographs like this were often taken for military mapping and reconnaissance. The view shows how the rail yard, the river and the town fit together.
