Glaciers were the main subject of this print, which Edward S. Curtis made as the expedition's official photographer. The Harriman Alaska Expedition of 1899 was a summer voyage along the Inside Passage and the Alaskan coast, financed by railroad magnate E. H. Harriman, whose name appears in the copyright notice. Curtis's photographs from the trip record the ice fields and tidewater glaciers that drew the scientists and tourists aboard, and they remain a valuable visual record of Alaska's coastline at the close of the nineteenth century.
