Members of the Harriman Alaska Expedition stand on the beach at Cape Fox, a southeastern Alaska village that was largely deserted when the party arrived in 1899, with carved totem poles rising behind them. The expedition, financed by railroad executive Edward H. Harriman, sailed the Alaska coast that summer with scientists, artists and photographers, and Edward S. Curtis, later known for his portraits of Native American peoples, was among those taking pictures. Scenes like this one record a coastal Tlingit community at a time when many such villages were emptying out.
