Few pictures on this board show people at work as directly as this one, which captures hunters pursuing seals from a canoe in Glacier Bay. Edward S. Curtis took it in 1899 while serving as a photographer on the Harriman Alaska Expedition, a summer voyage financed by railroad magnate E. H. Harriman that carried scientists and artists along the Alaska coast. The expedition reached Glacier Bay while its tidewater glaciers were retreating, and its photographs preserve both the changing landscape and the subsistence practices of the Indigenous people who relied on the bay's waters.
