A dog team does not go around the obstacle here but across it, with the drivers using a single floating slab of ice, called an ice cake, as a ferry over a lead, the narrow channel of open water that splits the pack. Travel across the Arctic ice depended on improvised crossings like this, since men and dogs had to keep moving over floes that could open or close within hours. The color halftone was published by the Frederick A. Stokes Company around 1909 or 1910, when American readers followed polar exploration closely, and the scene shows the practical ingenuity that such travel demanded.
